TECHNOLOGY IN TEACHING ENGLISH

COLLABORATIVE WORK 3

welcome to our blog, this work has as objective to show how technology can be used effectively in language teaching and learning. And by the different activities you will find in it you'll also find a way to engage your students in a blended learning environment with activities you can do in class and the students can revise at home.

ACTIVITY GUIDE

USING WEB 2.0 TOOLS TO ENHANCE LANGUAGE LEARNING – PART 3

Purpose:

To identify the role of Web 2.0 tools in online teaching and learning and to
implement their use in English language teaching. After designing an activity or
resource to present a selected aspect of English language using a Web 2.0
tool, in this third collaborative work students will design a blog or web site in
order to provide a space for English language learning.

Learning Strategy:

Collaborative work. Each member of the group will take his/her individual
product from Collaborative work 2 and will integrate it with those of partners’
into a group blog or web page. In addition, the group will design at least one
practice activity to enrich the blog or web site.

Expected product:

A blog or web page per group to teach and practice English language. The blog
or web page should include all members’ Web 2.0 activities or resources
designed previously in Collaborative Work 2. In addition, the blog or web page
must include at least two practice activities built with educative software like
Hot Potatoes, JClic, Ardora, or Educaplay. The group leader will be in charge
to post the link of the blog or web page in the forum.

  • Learning English Pronuntiation

Provinma is a feminine school with more than 280 students. There are 160 girls in primary and 120 in high school. The high school area is organized from the sixth to the eleven grades, according with the Colombian education regulations. The school directors decided to offer high quality courses in English because they got a compromise with the MEN (Ministry of National Education) special bilingual national program.  The age of the students vary from 6 to 12 years in primary and 12 to 18 years in high school.
Girls in the high school grades know already a wide number of English grammar rules and English words; substantives, adverbs, adjectives, and verbs. Students are able to construct simple sentences although the pronunciation is a real problem. In order to improve the student’s pronunciation and thus their comprehension of the language several activities have been designed. The objective of these activities is to improve the pronunciation skills. I’ll present a power point presentation with several exercises that are prepared to overcome these deficiencies.

Comments to the present work

Comment 1.

Web 2.0 tools can work together expanding the power of the presentations. A large number of tools help learners work on their writing/ publishing collaboratively, often working together in just one presentation. Language learners use ICT to help themselves to publish their work in the following ways:
-  Word processor and Desktop Publishing (DTP) software;
- Audio recording and editing tools to record interviews, discussions, etc;
- Digital cameras and camcorders to record presentations, interviews, role plays;
- PowerPoint as an aid to public presentations;
- web pages using Web authoring tools, e.g. Front Page, Prezi, Dreamweaver.
The following link gives an example of this situation:

Comment 2.

The new role of the teacher has changed radically thanks to the increasing sophistication and complexity of the media now available and which learners can use independently to achieve their own individual learning aims.  She/he has become a facilitator of learning rather than the font of wisdom. The teacher’s mastery of the new skills and literacies in a new pedagogical framework is the key to the successful deployment of the new media in language learning and teaching.

Comment 3.

The use of technology in second language is a real necessity nowadays. We have different methods for using technology in improving the four language skills. Students of English as a second language accept and use the different tools that are part of the new technology to enhance their comprehension. Reading comprehension is an essential part of the academic success. Whether the student is beginning to read or is an advance reader, there are printable reading comprehension exercises that can supplement what he is doing in class.

TRUE COGNATES AND FALSE COGNATES IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

Definition: In a technical sense, two words that have a common origin are cognates. Most often, cognates are words in two languages that have a common etymology and thus are similar or identical. For example, the English "kiosk" and the Spanish quiosco are cognates because they both come from the Turkish kosk.

True cognates examples:

Air - Aire
dictionary - diccionario
indelible - indeleble
invincible - invencible
inflammable - inflamable
imperceptible - imperceptible
incorrigible - incorregible
philanthropist - filántropo
perfect - perfecto

False cognates examples:

actual: real, efectivo (y no actual, que se dice current)
actually: en realidad (y no actualmente, que se dice nowadays, at present)
to advertise: anunciar (y no advertir, que se dice to warn)
to complain: quejarse (y no complacer, que se dice to please)

OK.  I hope that this tip can help you in

some confusions.  Bye, Bye

Julian Naranjo Profile

My name is Julian Antonio Naranjo Arcila. I am 29 years old; I live in Yarumal city, Antioquia. I’m in first semester of Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language.

I am a philosopher; I have been working as a teacher since my graduation date on April 26th 2008. It is a great pleasure to me sharing this course with you; my goal is to be a professional able to accomplish in my life new ways of getting knowledge and understanding of the things I haven’t discovered yet.

For my professional life I hope to become a Bachelor of Arts in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and exercise my teaching with more resources than I have at my disposal now.

I've been scout for over 10 years; I have a special love for nature and for trying to leave this world in a better condition than I found it. I believe such love is directly related to my favorite activity which is going camping in the forest. I don’t have a lot time to watch TV, but I like to watch sports, especially soccer.

At the moment I have a Scout group in my home town and in this group there are about 70 scouts with whom I share a special feeling for nature, love. This feeling gives me strength and encourages me to continue teaching to children how to be good citizens and good people, while they protect nature and help others to achieve their goals in life.

Paraphrasing Badem Powell, I work every day to try to put happiness into the lives of others. And perhaps one day I will be able to say: my mission is done, because just as the founder of the Scouts Movement I want to leave this world a little better than I found it[1]

Carmen Esperanza Profile

My name is Carmen Esperanza Castañeda, I am 58 years old. It is quite a reason of pride to tell my age, as I feel God has been so good to me and has given me the opportunity to enjoy different circumstances. So age is experience, is wisdom, and is happiness.

I am an ordained pastor, one of the few ordained women in my denomination, that means I am a reverend, but not many call me like that jus by my name. I have five children and four grandchildren. I love pets, as I live in the countryside I am able to have more than one dog and more than one cat. It is a real gift for me to get up in the morning and look at the blue sky, or to feel the cold weather of rainy days. The most I like is to have breakfast listening the singing of birds and other noises proper of nature.

My commitment to service, as I do not see my duties as my profession, includes working with women, helping them in different situations, counseling, visiting, praying, accompanying them in their circumstances, and sharing their sorrows is part of my life. Also my concern about children has lead me to focus my work in training in their spare time teaching values that unfortunately their families are not interested in give them.

Music of the world is one of my hobbies, I like hearing classic music, African, Portuguese fado, Brazilian samba, I love them. Also reading is something that has attracted my attention since I was a child. I think most of my reading took in my early years. Normally there are two or three books on my night table and I try to read at least a chapter every night.

Travel is also of my interest, even I am afraid of the highs I manage to travel when it is possible. I want to go Paris, Portugal and Italy.
